Music Makes Humanity Session

Music Makes Humanity: The Practice of Listening

Music Makes Humanity Session

12 June 2025 | Mini Hall, 5th Floor, Faculty of Education, Chulalongkorn University

This conversation did not set out to define a particular age, setting, or system in which music makes humanity. The experiences shared moved across early childhood classrooms, non-formal learning spaces, and self-directed forms of education. What music makes possible in each of these contexts is not simply the teaching of notes, but the opening of a space where people can listen, feel, and learn how they exist alongside others.

Listening became the centre of the conversation. Group music-making trains children to hear their own sound and the sounds of others at the same time. For an autistic child, music used by the teacher in place of instruction made it possible to remain in school and perform well academically. For secondary school students who resisted listening, openness began when the teacher started with the music they loved, rather than with what the teacher wished to teach.

The teachers in this conversation were therefore not only transmitters of skill. They were facilitators of possibility, and living examples of what they hoped to teach. Assessment, in this sense, should look at the process and the opportunities a teacher creates, rather than measuring only outcomes, prizes, or medals won in competition.

The session invited us to see that music does not shape humanity through excellence alone. It does so by teaching us to pause, to listen, and to respond to what surrounds us. This may be one of the quietest foundations of living together in society.
